RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, July 25, 1985

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Six 4-H communications entires [at the Ringgold County Fair] advanced to the Iowa State Fair after the presentations were judged in the Ringgold County courthouse assembly room Tuesday morning. Those advancing included Mary LONGFELLOW, Jackie COOPER, Emily McALEXANDER, Scott JOHNSON, Angela ELLIOTT and Misty ROGERS.

Papers nominating Janet McCLURE of Mount Ayr for a position on the Mount Ayr Community school board of education from District 3 were filed this week with the board secretary. To date she is the only one nominated for this position. Both Virgil HOWIE and Dale WALKUP, incumbents who have served nine and six years respectively, say they do not plan to run again in District 4, the other opening on the Mount Ayr Community board.

Though some have believed that Hawkeye Bank & Trust must have foreclosed on a funeral home, the hearse parked on West Madison in Mount Ayr near the bank actually belongs to Dan DAY. DAY, who is guidance counselor at Mount Ayr community high school, added the 1960 Cadillac hearse-ambulance to his collection around June 15 after seeing it parked near the city hall in New London, MO, near Hannibal, as he drove through at about 10 p.m. He stopped a night policeman to ask who owned the vehicles and the next day met with the owner and traded a pickup for it.

Three Grand Valley Community high school students attended the fifth annual Iowa Agricultural Youth Institute held in Ames recently. The three students were Jill SCHWALBE, Tracy LESAN and Jeff BEDIER.

Karla McGINNIS slugged a three-run home run in the Mount Ayr Raiderettes 12-0 win over Murray Monday night. The home run was the fifth McGINNIS has hit this season.

From a 12th place starting position, Randy SMITH of Mount Ayr went on to capture another feature win at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville Saturday night.
