The Benton Bearcats and the Tingley Topperettes were named as the two top 4-H clubs in Ringgold county during the annual 4-H Achievement Day held Saturday afternoon in Mount Ayr.

Shareholders of the Farmers and Merchants Mutual Telephone Company of Redding rejected the offer of purchase of the Iowa State Telephone Corporation at a meeting held Wednesday afternoon of last week in Redding. The vote was six to 12 against selling the telephone exchange, which is owned by 100 shareholders. The Iowa State Telephone Corporation, which owns nine exchanges in this area, is still interested in the purchase of the Redding property and further negotiations are anticipated.

Frank P. CLARKE, Ringgold county volunteer chairman for the sale of U.S. savings bonds and the citizens of Ringgold county were commended this week for having exceeded the county's 1961 savings bond quota.

The local bowlers continued their winning ways in the South Central Traveling League play Sunday, when they won four of six games from Corning at Lucky Lanes. The wins took Mount Ayr out of the cellar in the league.

The BAKER Farm of Beaconsfield purchased a Hampshire boar Thursday in Ames at the opening of Iowa's Swine Test Stations winter sales. The boar, which was sold to the BAKER Farm, has an index of 166; a performance of 1.93 pounds gain per day; 270 pounds of feed per hundred weight gain; .84 inches of back fat probe and littermate barrow cut of 4.04 percent ham and loin.

During the year 1961, the Record-News announced the birth of 347 babies, 40 more than the previous year. The list included 180 girls, 167 boys, four sets of twins and three adoptions.

For their outstanding 4-H recordbooks during the past club year, Mary Ann HERREN and Dale WALTERS were awarded the Lions club trophies during the regular meeting of the club held Tuesday evening.

Jim THOMPSON, 53, a former employee of the Iowa Southern Utilities company and Mount Ayr fire chief, died of cancer yesterday morning in his home in north Mount Ayr. He had been ill for many months.
