Steve and Gloria MEYERS escaped their trailer home in an early morning fire Tuesday but the trailer home, a dog and a cat did not escape from the flames. The 1973 mobile home was totally destroyed by the blaze and another mobile home next to it caught fire and, while not destroyed, may also be a total loss, according to fire department officials.

The state of Iowa has been named a temporary receiver in connection with a cattle feeding and investment arrangement attorney general Tom MILLER alleges had violated Iowa's Consumer Fraud Act. Named as defendants in the lawsuit are Professional Business Services, Inc. United Livestock Services, LLC, Rio Baca, Inc., George L. YOUNG and Kathleen I. McCONNELL. Rio Baca Inc. is an Iowa corporation headquartered in Grand River, which has had large land ownings in Decatur county and eastern Ringgold county.

Clay PETTIT of Mount Ayr sold his reserve champion 4-H broiler pen for $1,000 during the sale of champions at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines last week. Bobby COLESIMO of Artistic Solid Waste of Des Moines was the purchaser of the pen of broilers. 4-H members receive 80 percent of the purchase price and the rest goes to a scholarship program for 4-H members.

Ringgold county is one of 25 counties in the state designated as primary agriculture disaster areas, making them eligible for federal emergency agriculture assistance. Ringgold county, along with surrounding counties Clarke, Decatur and Taylor counties, were among 25 Iowa counties designated as disaster areas. The declaration covers losses caused by severe storms, hail, high winds and drought from May 1, 2001 to the present.

One of the new features on the grounds at the Mount Ayr Community elementary school is a Character Counts gazebo built with grant funds and donated labor by district staff and others. It is a six-sided building -- with one side for each of the six pillars of character.

Two new aides are on the staff of the Mount Ayr Community school district this year. New aides are Nancy ROE and Bobbie NOVAK.
