RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, August 25, 1983

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

There have been many over-the-coffee discussions comparing this year's head and drought to the previously most severe year of 1936, which those who lived through it still vividly remember.

Bob ERICKSON of Mount Ayr has been appointed as successor to John FAUST of Mount Ayr who retired the first of this month as director of the Commission for Veteran Affairs. ERICKSON was appointed by commission members -- Elmo ROE of Mount Ayr, Duane JOHNSON of Kellerton and Keith LININGER of Shannon City.

Progress is continuing on the remodeling of the Security State Bank building in Mount Ayr this week as the stucco exterior covering the older facing of the bank was applied. The remodeling project added a new dive-in area and second floor accounting department and community room. The bank project and a large construction project for Smith Auto Parts on the south side of the square will give the square a "new look" in the coming days.

Sister Joan SHEIL, a former Mount Ayr resident, is still going strong as a softball pitcher in the quad-city area in Eastern Iowa, according to a feature story in the Quad-City Times issue of August 8. Local residents remembered Sister Joan as a good athlete when she attended Mount Ayr high school where she graduated in 1952. Her parents, Clem and Bernice MOORE SHEIL, lived on a farm north of town, and were cousins of Marie SMITH of Mount Ayr. She would be a cousin of the Earnest RICHARDS family and recently attended the 80th birthday anniversary celebration for her aunt, Elizabeth MOORE RICHARDS.

On August 7, 12 youths and adults from local United Methodist Youth Fellowship groups set out on an exciting trip to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Included were Rev. Ed KAIL, Becky KEEP, Ben KEEP, Sandy LINK, Terry and Kelly MAIN, Kim McGINNIS, Sherri SMITH, Don STARK, Kelli SWEET and Ardie and Lori WINEMILLER.
