A new record was set in the State Fair sale of Champions after Clay PETTIT of Mount Ayr showed the 4-H grand champion market broilers at the fair. PETTIT'S broiler pen sold for $4,000 with Kentucky Fried Chicken of Des Moines and Waterloo and local supporters helping in the prize.

Marv WOOLLUMS of Mount Ayr, defending champion of the Iowa State Fair horseshoe pitching contest, held on to clinch the title again this year in the State Fair event.

Two 4-H members with Ringgold County ties were named to scholarships from the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement Saturday at the Iowa State Fair. Julie MORGAN, daughter of Neil and Cindy MORGAN of Kellerton and who has been active in both 4-H and FFA, was one of five students receiving two-year American Institute of Business tuition scholarships. Cinnamon WEEDA, daughter of Danny and Coletta WEEDA of Denison, formerly of Tingley, and who has been very active in both 4-H and FFA, received the $1,000Russ Brannen Memorial Beef Scholarship.

Six new faculty began work in the Mount Ayr Community school district when classes opened for the school district Wednesday. New teachers included Amy WHITTINGTON, elementary special education; Jody BOORD, sixth grade and coaching; Marilyn RIPPEY, elementary and junior high instrumental music; Julie STEWART, elementary special education; Pam CROSS, junior high social studies; and Drew LARSEN, high school special education and coaching.

A retirement reception for Marlen "Kay" TERWILLIGER from the Iowa Department of Human Services office in Ringgold County will be held Tuesday, August 29, in the assembly room of the Ringgold County courthouse. TERWILLIGER, who currently holds a secretary I position, will retire August 31 after more than 35 years with the department. She began work on January 4, 1965.
