A fourth Ringgold county high school student has been named State of Iowa Scholars by the Iowa College Aid Commission and will be recognized by Governor Tom VILSACK. Names to the honor, received by just 1,596 students across the state in the Class of 2002, was Landi McFARLAND of Tingley. She joins two other Mount Ayr Community high school seniors -- Sean M. KILGORE of Diagonal and Holly M. MEESTER of Mount Ayr - in receiving the award. A Lenox high school student -- Gentry R. BAKER of Clearfield -- was also named to the award.

Two Ringgold county students received division I ratings at the state individual speech contest in Adel Saturday. Receiving division I ratings from Mount Ayr Community high school were Sean KILGORE in spontaneous speaking and Amanda HYNEK in storytelling with her entry "Jack Rabbit and the Hiccups." Both had I's from all three judges.

A total of 42 Mount Ayr Community band members will give a concert at EPCOT Center in Florida Monday as part of the band trip to Disney World. Band members will leave for Florida Saturday morning.

Members of the Ringgold County Teen Center "Upper Limits" business team presented thank you cards to recent grantees last week. Elder Nancy DAUGHTON from the First Christian Church of Mount Ayr accepted a thank you card on behalf of the Disciples of Christ of the Upper Midwest who donated $1,000 to the Teen Center Endowment. Bill STULL from MFA accepted a thank you card on behalf of the MA Oil Foundation. The Foundation gave $750 to the Teen Center Endowment. Another recent donation was $500 from the C. Lefty GEIST Memorial. The last fund-raiser for the endowment is currently underway with the collection of pledges on three-point shots the varsity Raider basketball team and pins the Raider wrestling team made this season.

An open house was held at the Ringgold County Hospital lobby Sunday afternoon to welcome Dr. Douglas SMITH to the staff of the Mount Ayr Medical Clinic. SMITH has begun practicing in Mount Ayr on a part-time basis.
