RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, Thursday, March 22, 1962

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Gary WHEELER will be the guest of honor at the Mount Ayr community high school all-sports banquet Monday evening, March 26, in Mount Ayr. Born at Kellerton, Gary attended the Mount Ayr elementary school before moving with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Troy WHEELER, to Tama. He was co-captain of the 1961-62 Cyclones basketball team, which finished third in the tough Big Eight Conference race. A senior at the university, Gary ranks fourth in Iowa State career scoring with 749 points. He is a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. WHEELER of Kellerton.

As in his present position, where "neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds," these elements for more than a fifth of a century have been no deterrents for Max (Ike) McGEHEE in establishing a Sunday school attendance record, one which is possibly unequalled. On Marc h11, during the Bible school hour at the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr, Ike was presented a beautiful medal in recognition of his 21 years of perfect attendance.

Nancy BLUNCK, star guard of the Raiderettes of the Mount Ayr Community high school, was honored by being named a member of the Des Moines Register's fourth all-state team. She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy BLUNCK of Benton.

Lynn OBERMEIER, a consistently high scorer of the Raiderettes, and Cheryl MINNICK, guard of the same team, gained recognition by being named on the honor roll. Other girls in this area who were included on the honor roll are Peggy BAKER, forward, Grand Valley Community School; Carol BRAND, forward, and Theresa BRADLEY, guard, Lenox, and Kay DRISKELL, guard, East Union.

In a "ribbon cutting ceremony" yesterday morning Mayor Cyril C. GREENE of Tingley "threw the switch" that converted telephones of the area to the dial system of the Iowa State Telephone Corporation. The change over at Tingley is the first in the area, with the cut over the Shannon City scheduled for about June 13.

Sparks from a chimney, which was burning out, caused considerable fire damage Saturday afternoon to the roof and water damage to the interior of the home of Mrs. Ed HEGGS, who resides nine miles east of Mount Ayr.

Eight seniors and seven juniors of the Mount Ayr Community high school became members of the Parnassus Chapter of the National Honor Society at an induction ceremony Friday afternoon in the school auditorium. Included in the group were Janet WOOD, Donna WALTERS, Carolyn RYCHNOVSKY, Jeanne MARLER, Jane KINNE, Lynn OBERMEIER, Gary SHIELDS, Jinny THOMAS, Betty SACKETT, Gerald WAUGH, Carol CHICKEN, Gary KEPLINGER, Phyllis BASTOW, George McINTOSH and Paul LAY.

The COLE Firestone bowling team gained prominence last week in the ABC tournament in Des Moines by rolling a 2,756 team series, which featured a 1,022 second game, the highest team total in the booster division. However that record has fallen to another team. The Des Moines Tribune featured the local boys in the sports section. Members were Bill MONAGHAN, Keith COLE, Neil CHICKEN, Bob ROE and Lyle DULANY.
