A two-story farm home, owned by Hank SMITH of Mount Ayr, and household belongings, clothing, and food amounted to approximately $5,900 of renters, Scott and Steve WOOD, were lost when the fire totally destroyed the house about 11:20 p.m. Thursday, March 14.

Traffic has been cut to one lane and a crane moved in to help with the construction work on the bridge on Highway 169 near the turnoff to the fish hatchery. Traffic will be mantained during the six months it is expected to take to replace the bridge. Bridges are also being replaced along Highway 2 east of Mount Ayr this summer.

An article of a little different kind that the farm crisis stories featuring Mount Ayr was recently published in a Scottish newspaper, The Ayrshire Post, the newspaper that service Ayr, Scotland, ran an article March 1 about the efforts to focus on the Scottish hertiage of the county.

Roberta MORGAN of Mount Ayr attended the "living will" bill signing ceremony in the Governor's office in Des Moines recently. Mrs. MORGAN worked with the primary sponsor, Representative Jo An ZIMMERMAN, the past three years in developing the legislation. The "living will" law recognizes a legal document a written statement to the physician and hospital that persons do not want any extra-ordinary means of live saving used on them as they are dying. Through Mrs. MORGAN's efforts an extra section was added dealing with the rights of the family when decisions are being made to stop special life sustaining medical care on a dying patient.

Grand opening of the Raider's Inn, held last weekend, was marked by the Mount Ayr Resource Commission (MARC '85) with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Vera and John BYRON, owners of the former Red Carpet Inn, cut the ribbon while MARC '85 board members including Brenda BABCOCK, Bob SHAFTER, Larry HOPKEY and Steve ROE helped out.

A best-ever series of 651, coupled with line support of three pros, gave Rosemary SCHLAPIA of Mount Ayr a first-place in the King LOUIS Handicap doubles Pro-Am tournament in Overland Park, KS.

Among top award winners at the Mount Ayr Community Future Farmers of America chapter banquet Monday night were Curt JACKSON, outstanding supervised occupational experience project; Rod DAVISON, outstanding chapter member; Doug HICKMAN, Star Greenhand; Rick RICHIE, Star Chapter Farmer; and, Clint RIGGS, Star Agri-businessman.
