Kim GREGG of Mount Ayr was crowned the Ringgold County Fair queen for 1995 and Shawna CREVELING of Ellston was named county fair princess on the opening night of the Ringgold County Fair.

The east wall of the Mount Ayr Record-News building collapsed Friday morning, July 14, leaving the stud wall of the building exposed and the bricks of the wall formerly shared with the building next door in a heap in the empty lot to the east of the Record-News building.

Needless to say, this came as quite a shock to the employees at the newpaper when some people whose offices had previously been windowless suddenly had a view to rival that of the Grand Canyon. One might imagine that LuAnn JACKSON, in charge of ad layout, among other things, was looking pretty darn suspicious as she was the only one in the building when the incident occurred.

Alan SMITH, owner of the Record News, was out at the fair grounds taking pictures of the swine show when it happened. His wife, Valle, came rushing over to him and told him that he was needed at the office. When he said that he just needed to finish taking the pig pictures for the fair tab, she convinced him by delivering the news that one of the building's walls had collapsed. After hearing this, Mr. SMITH didn't require much more persuasion and returned to the office straight away to see the damage.

The following week brought many allusions to the Biblical story of Joshua at the battle of Jericho as well as a flood of theories as to why the wall had fallen. There were some creatives ones; everything from blaming the Record-News staff for holding raucous parties and construction going on in the empty lot next door to Mr. SMITH's frustrated banging of his head on the wall in quesiton.

The true reason, however, lied not in the accusation that we at the Record-News "shook our groove things" a little too exhuberantly at our christmas parties by in the fact that the Reocrd-News building had shared a wall with the old Irving's clothing store which was no longer standing. The wall had simply taken too much of a battering over the years to remain standing any longer.

Luckily, while the east wall was in shambles, no other serious structural damage was caused and the Record-News received a much needed computer upgrade from the ordeal

Bill RUSK of Mount Ayr was elected as alternate national executive committeeman during a business session of the Iowa American Legion's 77th convention.

Diane SHARP, daughter of Phyllis DULANY of Mount Ayr, was honored for her 25 years of service at the law firm of Hopkins and Heubner at a gathering at Noah's Restaurant in Des Moines July 12. DULANY attended the dinner. SHARP started at the law firm before graduating from the American Institute of Business in Des Moines when there were only 10 employees. Now there are 60.

Patrick CARR of Spencer, a former Mount Ayr resident, was one of two district judges recently appointed by Gov. Terry Branstad. CARR, a 1968 graduate of Mount Ayr Community high school and the son of Marian HUGHES of Lenox and the late Ed CARR, will preside in the northwestern Iowa district. This includes Lyon, Osceola, Dickinson, Emmet, Kossuth, O'Brien, Clay, Palo Alto, Cherokee and Buena Vista counties.

Strong winds and lightning in storms over the weekend caused some damage in Ringgold county and the Saturday night storm cancelled events at the Ringgold County Fair and postponed the Class 1A district softball tournament.

A pine tree over 70 feet tall was the victim of the strong winds that blew through Tingley Saturday night as a storm front moved across Ringgold county. This tree stood on the empty lot to the west of the Tingley community building.

Last week was the hottest in seven years with temperatures averaging seven to nine degrees above normal.

July 09, twin sons, Clifton Lane and Hunter Christian, to Ann and Greg SEMRAD; Della CULVER of Maloy is the proud great-grandmother.
