RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, September 18, 1980

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

New school board member Mary Sue WEBB was sworn in and and new board officers were elected at a special Mount Ayr Community school board meeting Monday night. Virgil HOWIE was elected president of the board for the next year and Dale WALKUP was elected vice-president for the new school year. With a small turnout of less than 20 percent of the eligible votes, Mary Sue WEBB took a landslide victory in the Mount Ayr Community School Board election last week.

In Diagonal's school election, Bill GOODALE was elected in district one and Phillip KELLER won on a write-in vote for district three.

Elected in the Grand Valley Community school district were Don HEWLETT in district three and D.A. JENNINGS in district five. Both were running unopposed on the ballot.

Mount Ayr will have a new banking facility in the near future. Carl RIGGS, president of the Tingley State Savings Bank, said that the Iowa State Department of Banking has given approval for [the] establishment of banking facilities here. The action followed application made by the Tingley bank, investigation by the banking department and a public hearing. RIGGS said he received notification Friday morning of the approval and that construction on the new facility will start this fall. The bank has purchased the former SHAFER Standard Station, at Taylor and South Streets and will completely remodel the building with an addition to double the size. The new addition will have a full basement. The Tingley State Savings Bank will continue to operate its facility in Tingley, RIGGS said.

Over 700 people toured the new Mount Ayr Community elementary school building during the open house held at the building Sunday afternoon.
