RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, July 18, 1985

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

The Bill HOHLFELD family hosted a West German foreing exchange student, Frank RAUE, this year. "He became part of the family the day he arrived," members of the HOHLFELD family felt as they visited about their exchange student. "His 10 months here left impressions that we will never forget, but it made it very difficult to say goodbye," Bill said. "He took some 400 pictures home with him so he could tell the story of his stay here, his attending Mount Ayr Community high school, his association with us (Bill and his wife Norma and their senior-to-be daughter, Anne-Marie) and the special events in which he was involved. But the pictures won't tell all he meant to us," they felt.

Top winners in the kids divivion of the Redding Frontier Days parade Saturday were Jessica GEPNER, dressed up as a Smurf, and Stephaine BAINUM, who was dressed as a nurse.

Top three awards at the Mount Ayr Auto Show Sunday went to two Bedford exhibitors. Jim ERNST of Bedford won the trophy for the best paint job on his 1968 Camaro. Jeff BARTLES of Bedford won trophies for best of show and best engine with his 1979 Trans Am. Both cars had a Mount Ayr connection, as Greg ROBERTS of Roberts Auto Body Shop in Mount Ayr did the paint jobs on the winning cars. Winners were chosen by voting by the exhibitors.

Two Ringgold county youth will spend a week at the YMCA camp north of Boone July 14-20. Ringgold county sheriff Lyle MINNICK took the Iowa Sheriffs and Deputies Association candidate, Robert Miller of Tingley, who is 12-years-old; and the Mount Ayr American Legion Post #172 sponsored Jack WILT of Redding, who is 11, to the campsite Sunday. Parents of the two are Sheridan and Suzanne MILLER and Bob and Linda WILT.

More than $700 was raised at a Ringgold County Group Home benefit dinner Friday, July 12, bringing the total fund for the home to $13,500. The benefit was sponsored by Diagonal Community Betterment, Diagonal Lions and Diagonal Housing Corporation.

A combine operated by Glee MOBLEY of rural Benton at the farm of his father nearby was totaled as fire started around the engine about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, July 11. Mount Ayr volunteer firemen were called to the Burl MOBLEY farm seven miles west of Mount Ayr on Highway 2.

Emily McALEXANDER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene McALEXANDER of Beaconsfield, will be among the candidates competing for the title of Miss Teen of Iowa at the annual State Padgeant which will be held in Newton July 19-21. Emily McALEXANDER will be sponsored in the pageant by residents and businesses of Ringgold county.
