Superintendent Phil BURMEISTER is retiring at the end of the current school year and the board has been working on a plan of administrative transition to fill administrative positions in the district.

Diagonal high school students who attend classes at Mount Ayr Community high school were followed in several classes by a camera crew from Iowa Public Television Tuesday as part of a story being done on how the Diagonal Community school district has worked to stay viable in a time when many small school districts are disappearing.

Two Mount Ayr Community high school students will be taking part in the All-State Music Festival in Ames this week. Clara TERRELL will be playing the oboe with the all-state band while Ashley INGRAM will be singing with the Opus Choir, which honors top middle school singers in the state.

Eight Ringgold County 4-H members were among those receiving the 17 major awards presented at the Ringgold County 4-H awards celebration Sunday. Among the top award winners were Holly MEESTER, Amy HYNEK, Landi McFARLAND, Oakel PETTINGER, Andrea BENTLEY, Abby STEPHENS, Matthew WEEDA and Landon JOBE.

The new Mount Ayr Medical Clinic building, located adjacent to Ringgold County Hospital, will be having its open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Also holding an open house Sunday will be the Clearview Estates assisted living complex, recently completed, adjacent to the Clearview Home in Mount Ayr.

Donna MELVIN of Blockton was sworn in as the new postmaster at Benton by Mike BOWEN, manager of post operation in Des Moines recently.

Brad ELLIOTT of Mount Ayr has been named tothe 2000 all-state track team by the Iowa Track and Field Coaches Association.

Senior 4-H members who were present to receive record book awards this year included Landi McFARLAND, Andrea BENTLEY, Holly MEESTER, Abby STEPHENS, Amy HYNEK, Shane BERGER and Adam SCHLAPIA.

A ribbon cutting was held this week for Auto Works, a business being run by Ed HIEBING.
