RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, May 16, 1985

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr Record-News

When John OVERHOLTZER of Tingley saw the "big plume" of dustraised by the near-tornado strength winds that blew through Ringgold county last Saturday afternoon, he, for the first time in his life, took shelter. Similarly, Frank RICHARDS decided to break his 70-odd year long tradition when he saw the dirt cloud. The high winds and hail damaged many trees, some feed bins, barns and homes, but caused no injuries. Near the trailer home of Mrs. Bernice THOMPSON, located in the east end of Tingley, the storm seemed to act most like a tornado.

Separate graduation ceremonies of seniors in the Diagonal Community and Clearfield Community graduating classes are schedules for next week. Seven Clearfield seniors will be graduated in exercises to be held Sunday, May 19, in the school gym. There will be 14 graduating from Diagonal Community high school at exercises set for Tuesday, May 21, at 8 p.m. in the Diagonal auditorium.

Milt HENDERSON has a passion for track that is so intense that some people in the communities have mistaken him for the Mount Ayr Community track coach. He has attended 51 runnings of the Drake Relays, missing only five relays there since his father gave him a trip to Des Moines as a graduation present in 1929. Four of those missed years came when he was in the service during World War II. He was awarded a plaque by Mount Ayr Community high school athletic director Mark LARSEN at the Raiderette Relays. The presentation recognized HENDERSON'S years of service to the athletic program of Mount Ayr Community high school.

Janice BROWN, R.N., M. Ed., nursing director of Ringgold County Hospital, has been elected chairman of the Southwestern Community College Nursing Education Advisory Committee. SWCC offers two nursing programs, practical and registered. Fifty percent of the licensed nurses at Ringgold County Hospital are graduates of Southwestern Community College.
