The lack of rainfall in Ringgold county this year [2000] has brought a declaration of a local drought disaster area from the Ringgold county board of supervisors. The county became the first in the state to make the declaration for the year 2000. According to local weather watchers located in rural Mount Ayr and Beaconsfield, rainfall in the county in 2000 iis less than half of what it was for the first five and one-half months in 1999.

Matt DELUHERYfrom the Southern Iowa Rural Water Association said that there is sufficient water in Three Mile and Twelve Mile reservoirs in Union county, which serve the association, to support the rural water system for two years without any rainfall. He noted that water usage in the system is increasing due to industrial expansion as well as more livestock being watered from the rural water system. The water plant is capable of pumping more water daily than is now being used, he said.

The new Mount Ayr Medical Clinic building, which is attached to the Ringgold County Hospital's southwest side, is taking shape, but will be a month late in being complete. New goal is to have the building completed by the end of July instead of the end of June, the hospital board was told at its meeting Monday night.

Three resignations were accepted by the school board at its meeting Monday night. Brad RUMPLE, junior high social studies teacher and coach; Melinda MADISON, half-time physical education instructor and coach; and Sue JONES, special education aide, all had resignations acted on at the meeting.

Ringgold county youngsters attended a Bubble Mania Camp last Friday sponsored by Iowa State Extension Council. Twenty-six kids between the ages of kindergarten and third grade enjoyed a day of fun with bubbles. The biggest highlight of the day was getting a chance to sit in a bubble.
