A Ringgold county woman will be in the thick of activities when Ronald Reagan is inaugurated in Washington, D.C. January 20. Mildred ELLIOTT, Mount Ayr, president of the Iowa Federation of Republican Women and a board member of the National Federation of Republican Women, will be attending many of the events surrounding the inauguration of the new president.

The low bid of $349,000 by Betz and Beer Construction Co. of Adair has been accepted by members of the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr. Construction of the one-story building to replace the structure lost by fire last February, is expected to begin this spring. A general completion date is in November, 1981. The final signing of the contract took place Dec. 28, 1980 and involves the construction of a building of 8,000 square feet that is enclosed plus a bell tower and entry court that features an auto "drop off" under an overhead roof.

When a three-bedroom home in north Mount Ayr goes up for auction sometime this summer, eight Mount Ayr Community high school students will know as much about the house as anyone. The students should be experts in what the home has to offer. They have done most of the work in constructing the home as part of a new vocational education class at Mount Ayr Community high school.

This is the first year for the vocational carpentry program at the high school and the learning by doing approach is including the construction of a complete home. The foundation was poured by a local firm, a local plumber is helping with plumbing and heating, an electrician is overseeing the electrical work and a local firm is doing the masonry work. Everything else, however, is being done by teacher Ron LANDPHAIR and the eight members of the class.

Officers elected for 1981 when the Ringgold County Soil Conservation District met January 2 are Paul SMITH, chairman; Donald WOOD, vice-chairman and Deborah FRENCH, secretary-treasurer. Other appointments made were Ralph LONG, chairman of the education committee; Roger SCHNOOR, chairman of the watershed committee; Paul SMITH, chairman of the soil stewardship committee; Keith LININGER, Southern Iowa Consrvancy District Advisory Committee.

There were 18 big bales of hay and some that had been chopped that were destroyed by fire at the Mike LYNCH farm Monday, Jan. 12. Mount Ayr volunteer firemen were called to the scene about 2:10 p.m. and worked until about 7 p.m. to prevent the involvement of a nearby ground silo and to extinguish the fire in the hay. LYNCH had been chopping big bales of hay at his farm 13 miles southwest of Mount Ayr when the bearing went out of the chopper, firemen said. This spread hot metal on the hay and eventually it blazed.

A parked semi bumped a parked pickup in an unusual accident and with two other mishaps, totaled over $5,000 worth of damage in accidents reported through the Ringgold county sheriff's office this week. The semi pickup accident happened at 8:15 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12, on Fillmore Street in front of Southwest Builder Supply.

A 1969 Mack semi truck, owned by Associated Building Center of Saint Joseph, MO was parked in front of the lumberyard and a 1978 Ford pickup truck, owned by Jack GARRITY of rural Tingley, was parked in a driveway of the lumberyard. The semi lost its air brakes and rolled down the hill, striking the GARRITY pickup and doing $1,500 damage. The semi was not damaged. Warren Lee MELBOURN of Saint Joseph, MO had been driving the semi.
