Lost in the fire were 41 head of hogs, a yearling Holstein heifer, about 1,000 bales of hay and 400 bales of straw. Bill WARIN and Herbert NOLAN, who were driving in opposite directions on Highway 2, observed the fire and stopped at the farm and wakened the FORCES.

A two-story farm house, located eight miles northeast of Mount Ayr and occupied by the Ellis MAUDLIN family, was destroyed by fire Thursday night. Only a small amount of furniture and bedding was saved. The fire was believed to have started in the kitchen, where lard was being rendered.

Mary Sue BASTOW, 17-year-old senior in the Mount Ayr Community high school, is one of 33 Iowa girls selected to attend the fourth annual 4-H home furnishings study trip to Chicago, IL, according to county Extension director J. N. CHICKEN. Miss BASTOW, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob BASTOW of Mount Ayr, has been a 4-H club member for eight years.

The post office in Diagonal was entered by thieves either Friday night or early Saturday morning, but nothing was taken. The breakin was discovered Saturday morning by postmaster Richard YASHACK when he opened the office about 7 a.m.

John PETERSON, clarinetist, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl PETERSON of Mount Ayr, is a member of the band, which is making its 25th annual spring tour.

Richard PRENTIS was elected and installed as associate patron of Mount Ayr Chapter No. 356, Order of the Eastern Star, during the regular meeting held Monday night of last week. Mr. PRENTIS was elected to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Raymond BARKER on December 10 of last year.
