RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, June 13, 2002

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Talk about a long distance call. Beth WHITSON of Beaconsfield received the first phone call from her daughter, Dr. Peggy WHITSON, Saturday, checking in from aboard the International Space Station, orbiting high above earth. It takes some adjusting to living in the weightlessness of the space station accommodations, but even there it is possible to check in with the folks at home.

Ron SCOTT recently retired from his position as guidance counselor at Mount Ayr Community high school after 36 years of teaching.

Dr. Mike MAGERS was recently hired to fill a full-time position for family practice physician at the Mount Ayr Medical Clinic. MAGERS will begin at the clinic Monday, August 5.

Work is being done on two rural United Methodist Churches in Ringgold county by the Mobile United Methodist Missionaries. Volunteers recently painted the Middle Fork United Methodist Church. Later in the month, the volunteers will be reroofing the Wishard Chapel United Methodist Church.

A memorial plaque recognizing the years of Tingley high school, superintendent and coach M. H."Obie" OBERMEIER, exceptional sports achievements under coach OBERMEIER and classmate and friend Jon O'NEAL was unveiled as part of the Tingley alumni banquet observance May 25. Tingley high school was in existence from 1883 to 1959. OBERMEIER, who died in an accident in 1964, was superintendent, teacher and coach at Tingley high school from 1941-1944 and from 1951-1959. Classmate Jon O'NEAL died in an accident a few weeks before school closed in 1959.

Melvin RICHARDS and Jerry JOBE headed the project. Help in setting the stone and landscaping came from Melvin RICHARDS, Sue RICHARDS and Turk ALLEN.

The Mount Ayr Regular Baptist church is pleased to announce that Matthew and Laurie NOVOTNY have accepted the call to the pastorate of the church. The NOVOTNYS have moved to Mount Ayr from Volga, where they have been involved in the ministry since 1996.
