RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, December 12, 2002

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr Record-News

After six months in space Dr. Peggy WHITSON'S finally back on terra firma. The space shuttle Endeavour landed at the Kennedy Space Center Saturday after a record-setting four tries. Beth WHITSON said that she had been able to talk with her daughter, Peggy WHITSON, after her arrival. Getting readjusted to gravity has been a challenging experience, Dr. WHITSON told her mother. Dr. WHITSON'S first experience at beginning to feel gravity was as she held a camera during the return trip. There was some nausea as she tried to make her first movements after the landing and some disorientation in the dark at night, her mother noted. And WHITSON did get the steak and salad she ordered, Beth WHITSON confirmed. "It takes about 45 days to get completely readjusted to life on earth after spending so much time in a near-weightless environment," WHITSON said. After some recuperation time the WHITSONS hope to have a visit from their daughter and her husband. "She'll want a meal featuring beef or pork when she comes home," Beth WHITSON guessed.

A Ringgold county resident is a new member of the American Angus Association, the national beef registry organization headquartered in Saint Joseph, MO. Francis SHIELDS of Ellston has joined more than 36,000 active adult and junior members in the organization, which is the largest beef cattle registry association in the world.
