RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, January 10, 2002

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Ringgold county will be hit the hardest of all 99 counties if the Iowa Chamber Alliance proposal is passed by lawmakers this session. That is, if the Iowa Legislature decides to do anything about it. Ringgold county currently receives more than $2.4 million in road-use tax formula (RUTF) allocations to service 899 miles. In a five-year span, the Chamber Alliance (CA) plan would reduce that allocation by $1,967,896 to $468,167 or 80.5 percent. Of all 99 counties, 81 counties would see a decline in allocations with Ringgold county seeing the worst. It would essentially reduce the allocation per mile of county road from $2,990 to $520.

New city council members were Darrell CASE and Jodie WURSTER who replaced Ken JONES and Ed McCREARY.

Royce YEATER from the National Trust for Historic Preservation Chicago office attended the Mount Ayr city council meeting Monday night to get agreement on a preservation grant with the city. YEATER had earlier in the day made a presentation of a check for the grant of $100,000 from Dr. Helen LUYBEN of New York for historic preservation work around the Mount Ayr square. Dr. LUYBEN'S grandfather was Dr. Frank Henry LANDES, in whose memory the grant was set up.

Taking first place at the Griswold wrestling tournament were Blake HAUGLAND at 171 pounds and Mark TRULLINGER at 189 pounds.

The Tingley Topper 4-H Club recently competed a community service project in Tingley. The club members took down the old street sign names and hung new ones to help improve the looks and safety of Tingley. Phil SOUTH originated the idea and then brought it to the Tingley Toppers 4-H group for discussion. Those helping included Matthew WEEDA, Wesley CAMPBELL, Jesse CHIZEK, Phil SOUTH, Landi McFARLAND, Kacey MILER, Julie CHIZEK and Amy WEEDA. The 4-H leader was David McFARLAND.

The goal of 127 units of blood was surpassed when the Red Cross bloodmobile made its January visit to Ringgold county. There were 149 people attending and 129 who were able to give blood at the bloodmobile visit Monday at First Christian Church in Mount Ayr. A total of 11 new donors came to the drive and 23 walk-ins participated.
