RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, November 09, 1995

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Activists from across the Midwest are being invited to a public meeting to be held Saturday, Nov. 11, at 10 a.m. at the community hall in Maloy to discuss nonviolent action directed against corporate hog farming. A campaign of action "in the tradition of Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Susan B. Anthony and Cesar Chaves" has been proposed by the Strangers and Guests Catholic Worker community in Maloy against large corporations raising hogs in industrial-style confinement complexes and in favor of family farms and a cleaner environment.

Mark K. FLAMMANG begins working this week as the district fisheries biologist for the Department of Natural Resources based at Rathburn State Fish Hatchery. FLAMMANG is a son-in-law of Dan and Jeannette LUTRICK of Mount Ayr.

A tribute to Robert BUCK, a Ringgold county native, was printed in the November 1 issue of the Des Moines Register by retired Register editorial writer Lauren SOTH. BUCK grew up in Ringgold county and went on to a distinguished career in agricultural policy making, while farming as well. SOTH wrote that BUCK'S life "provided an excellent example of democratic leadership in the development of American agriculture."
