RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, September 08, 1955

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Othel RICHARDS won the Mount Ayr golf championship Sunday when he defeated the defending champion, Royce DAVIS, in the finals.

Barbara LONG and Beth WALTERS, members of the Beaconsfield Bomberettes 4-H Club rated a blue ribbon on their demonstration at the Iowa State Fair last week. Barbara is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Homer LONG of Beaconsfield and Beth's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Chris WALTERS, also of Beaconsfield.

The Ringgold county grain and forage judging team outscored 27 other teams at the Iowa State Fair Thursday to win the annual 4-H state crops identification and judging contest. The winners scored 3,415 points out of a possible 3,000 to gain the title. Richard TAYLOR, 18, of Diagonal, with 1,170 points, was the top scoring individual of the entire group of 128 boys competing. Other members of the team, all of whom ranked among the top 10 scorers, were Melvin GRAY, 16, of Mount Ayr, fourth with 1,130 points; Lyman WALKER II, 17, of Kellerton, seventh, with 1,115 points; and Richard WLSON, 16, of Hatfield, ninth with 1,110 points.

In spite of drought conditions, some of the good Iowa soil continues to produce bumper crops. As evidence is a single plant of soybeans which was taken from the Roy GARDNER farm in Washington township. It contains 485 pods by actual count, 430 of which are well-filled.
