The Mount Ayr Raiders closed their basketball season Monday night in Villisca when they were eliminated from district play by the Corning Red Raiders, 9-61. The Raiders finished the course with an impressive 15-3 records. The game also marked the close of the high school cage careers for eight seniors - Don SMITH, Gary KEPLINGER, Dick WEEHLER, Dan CARR, Bob ALLEN, Paul RUCKMAN, Joe BOWEN and Bill WARIN. The coach was Dale HERRINGTON and assistant coach was Jack WILKINSON.

L. Clark LAY, professor of mathematics and education at Orange County State College, Fullerton, CA, has been awarded a National Science Foundation Faculty Fellowship for 1962-1963, announcement of which was made recently by the college. Dr. LAY was the recipient of one of the college professional awards granted nationally this year, which will include a year's salary and a nine months' leave of absence from the Orange County State College. Dr. LAY is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer LAY of this city.

Ninety contestants and advisors from 11 schools and 12 judges participated in the South Sub-District F.F.A. contests of the south Central District held Saturday morning in the high school building with the Mount Ayr F.F.A. chapter as host. Participants of the local chapter won three gold and one bronze ratings in the four events in which they were entered. The chapter program demonstration team, composed of Lyle FARIS and David BARKER, with Eddie FORD as projector operator, and parliamentary procedure team, members of which were Danny COULSON, Ronnie WOOD, Joe BROWN, David LYNCH and David LUMBARGER, won gold ratings and the right to represent this area in the district contests. Phillip DRAKE also won a gold rating in the freshman creed speaking contest against extremely stiff competition and Jack SICKELS received a bronze rating in the welding contest.

Mrs. Edna BURGHER announced in this issue of the Record-News her candidacy for the Democrat nomination for Ringgold county recorder at the primary election on June 4. Mrs. BURGHER, a lifelong resident of Ringgold county and daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charley COULSON, was born in Lotts Creek township and graduated from the Hatfield, MO high school.

Quentin V. ANDERSON announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for state representative from Ringgold county. Quentin is a son of the late George E. ANDERSON and Lena (RICHARDSON) ANDERSON. Mr. ANDERSON was born and reared to manhood on a farm near Ellston.

W. E. KELLEY, chairman of the local Farm Bureau's national policy committee, will represent Ringgold county at a conference to be held March 11-14 in Washington, D. C.
