This week's hot topic was the five fires that were stared in the Blockton area, destroying a barn, a corn crib, a hay baler, a field and the First Christian Church building. The first call came from a motorist who happened to be passing by the farm of Terry HENSON and noticed that the barn was burning.

The fire department wasn't able to salvage the barn or the corn crib but luckly (sic) no one was injured. Later, the fire department was called back to the HENSON farm abut a fire that had broken out in one of his empty metal hog houses.

The exact cause of the fires was unknown but was suspected to be caused by faulty wiring combined with the hot, dry weather that had been plaguing Mount Ayr that summer.

The same afernoon, a grass fire at the farm of Charlies BROWN was reported. The only property lost was a hay baler which was owned and operated by Jerry KING and had caused the fire in the first place. Firemen were called back to the BROWN farm at 8:30 that night to extinguish the last of the sparks which had caught some dead trees and was threatening to spread.

The results of the Ringgold county fair were announced this week. the champions were as follows: Tammy WALTERS with her commercial gilt project, Maria BROWN with her commercial heifer project, Sandy WEEDA with her cow-calf project, and Kevin TRIGGS, Peter HAYSE, Colette RIGGS and Mary Ann WEEDA with their purebred heifer projects.

Winners in the home economics and science and mechanics category were Becky WHEELER, Vanette HUNT, Donald BRYAN, Carol WALTERS and Shelley SOBOTKA.
