RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, June 06, 2002

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Several Ringgold county residents gathered at the Pheasant Run Steakhouse and Lounge last Thursday night waiting to see Peggy WHITSON go into space. However, due to mechanical problems and weather forecasts, the launch was postponed. At pre-press time, the launch was set for 4:23 p.m. Wednesday.

Not all the races were set for the November general election when Ringgold county residents went to the polls to vote during Tuesday's primary election. While many of the county races were uncontested, the supervisors' race was not. Ethel CAMPBELL will go up against Dave INOLES for the expired term seat and Wayne KEMERY won the nomination for the vacancy seat.

Alex WYBRANSKI, age 16, from Berlin, Germany, attended MountAyr Community high school as an exchange student this year. She lived with two host families in Ringgold county. From August through December she lived in Maloy in the home of Brian TERRELL and Betsy KEENAN. She then moved to Mount Ayr to live with the family of Bill and Sandy ARMSTRONG and their sons.

Every 10 years with a new census, director districts in a school district which elects board members from geographic areas must redraw the boundaries to make sure they represent about an equal number of people. There are approximately 4,500 people residing in the borders of the Mount Ayr Community school district, so districts this year were redrawn to have approximately 1,100 in a district. Not more than a five percent deviation of population is allowed between the districts.

Ruth THOMAS is on her way to visit the smallest town in every state. THOMAS has been to 30 states and has 18 more to visit. THOMAS stopped in Kellerton for rest and recuperation before heading to Beaconsfield.

A ceremony honoring State of Iowa Scholars was held in Des Moines on May 1. Among those honored by Governor VILSACK was Holly MEESTER of Mount Ayr. She is the daughter of Pat and Jay MEESTER.
