Five Mount Ayr high school students excaped serious injury Saturday afternoon when the car in which they were riding was involved in an accident near Martensdale. They were Dan STEELE, driver of the car, Pat RUSK, Phyllis GUNTER, Renabell ELMORE and Janis TODD

The youth were returning to Mount Ayr from Indianola, where they had been entered in a music contest. The accident happend two miles north of Martensdale on Highway 28, when Dan's car was struck by one driven by Diane McGINNIS of Indianola. According to a report from Sheriff H. P. TODD, who went to the scene of the accident, Miss McGINNIS drove onto the highway from a graveled road intersetcion without first observing a stop sign. In trying to avoid the accident, Dan drove his car off the side of the highway, but it was struck on the left front side by the McGINNIS car. Pat RUSK, who suffered hip injuries, was taken to the hospital in Winterset, where she remained under obsrvation until the following morning. Phyllis GUNTER, who was riding inthe back seat with Pat, suffered a cut on her one foot and a bruised arm. The other three youth escaped injury.

Fifteen neighbors and friends of Hayden SMITH went April 20 to his farm andplawed for him forty aces in four hours' time. Participating in the "good neighbor" deed were Howard YASHACK, Leo McBRIDE, Fuzzy BISHOP, Charlie GIBSON, Perk THURMAN, Rex SICKELS, Howard WIMER, Leland SICKELS, Clem SHEIL, H. L. REYNOLDS, E. H. SMITH, H. L. CORNELISON, Vern LONG, Claire FOLTZ and Stanley SMITH.

Donald CORLL, of Liberty township, received his appointment Saturday as rural letter carrier on route No. 3 out of Mount Ayr. He succeeds Leo LAIRD whose disability retirement became effective in 1953. Forest JOHNSTON has served as temporary carrier since December 1, 1953.

Dr. E. J. WATSON, who is nearing the 51st anniversary of his start in medical practice, was this week named by the Iowa State Medical Society as outstanding general practicioner of the year.

Vern TAGGART purchased last week Jim SKINNER'S barbershop in Mount Ayr with possession being given April 27.

  • May 03, a son, Terry Gene, to Mr. and Mrs. Billie Gene DUNKESON, Mount Ayr
