RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, February 5, 1987

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Kay SICKELS attended the city council meeting, bringing petitions with over 400 names on them, asking that the brick street off the square not be resurfaced with asphalt in the city's proposed street project for 1987. The petitions asked the council to "save the brick streets in Mount Ayr" and that the council "refrain from the proposed surfacing so that an important part of our historical past may be preserved."

Dirt dug up where the new sewerline has been run to provide service to the new Ringgold County Group Home marks the site where the long-awaited building will go up in the spring. Bids were opened this week for construction of the building, which will house eight handicapped adults and home "parents." The site is just north of Judge Lewis Park. Water and sewer lines are in place and construction should progress to allow the first residents into the new facility later in the year. The project will be financed through a Community Development Block Grant received through the county and a loan from the Farmers Home Administration, along with more than $17,000 raised in a fund drive across the county.

The five members of the Mount Ayr Community high school academic decathlon team all received individual medals when the competition was held at the Green Valley Area Education Agency in Creston Saturday. Students participating were Jerry NOBLE, Shelly JONES, Amy BRADLEY, Leslie BARKER and Randy HENSLEY.

Cody SHAY picked up a tournament championship at 126 pounds Saturday in the Guthrie Center tournament.

Two fifth placings were brought home by Mount Ayr entrants in the district Elks Hoop Shoot contest held at Red Oak Saturday, Jan. 31. Rebecca CLARK in the girls 12-13-year-old competition and Cody ROE, in the boys eight-nine-year-old competition, placed fifth. ROE had made 20 out of 25 tries at the basket and was tied for first until he was penalized points for a ball bouncing rule infraction.

Diagonal and Mount Ayr Community girls basketball squads still have statistics listed among the top in the state for six-girl teams in this week's report from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Association. In team statistics, the Raiderettes rank 30th in the state in team offense with a 72.33 point per game average. Diagonal ranks 59th in the state with a 68.06 point per game average. Mount Ayr Community also ranks fifth in the state in team free throw percentage with a .645 percentage. Three Raiderettes also are included in individual statistics. Kim McGINNIS ranks 29th in individual scoring with a 35.71 points per game average, scoring 500 points in 14 games so far this season. Angie SMITH ranks 44th in the state in free throw percentage, putting in 86 of 114 attempts for a .754 average. Shelly TAYLOR ranks 49th in the state in interceptions, making 61 in 14 game or a 4.36 average.
