Eighteen letters written during the Civil War from soldiers back to Nancy Jane DeWITT and her father in Ringgold County are the feature of a new book published for the Ringgold County Historical Society. Civil War Letters Written To Nancy Jane DeWITT is the title of the book, edited by Raymond V. BANNER and Shirley NELSON HOUSE and published by Paragon Publications of Mount Ayr.

Each day of the Iowa State Fair an Iowan will be honored as Iowan for a Day. Saturday, August 19, the shining star for the day will be Charles MANDERS of Ellston, the first person in Ringgold County to receive the recognition. MANDERS was selected due to his dedicated involvement in Ellston and the surrounding area. Ethel CAMPBELL spearheaded the effort to get MANDERS nominated.

Josh EGLY of Red Oak, formerly of Redding and the son of John and Marlee EGLY, placed third in the Southwest Iowa Arm Wrestling Tournament on July 4 in Malvern. EGLY arm wrestled inthe 165-pound left-handed class.

Jennifer ENGLAND of Mount Ayr, a Ringgold County student, received the Iowa Health Care Association Foundation Nurse Scholarship 2000 award. She was on of 10 winners across Iowa.

Among top entries in the beef show at the Ringgold County Fair were Kellen WALDEIER and his new crop calf steer; Adam SCHLAPIA and his champion registered Herford heifer; and Wes PIERSCHBACHER and his top wrangler entry. Cole WILLIS showed the champion new crop calf heifer and the champion new crop calf bull.
