PATRICK and KATIE (WARD) CARR

Katie CARR, daughter of Patrick and Mary WARD, came to Beaconsfield, Iowa, with her parents about 1884. In 1896 she married Patrick CARR, a native of Donegal, Ireland. After living a short time in Kansas City near Patrick's brother, Peter, they moved to a farm east of Beaconsfield.

They became the parents of ten children: Eugene E., Marie V., Kathleen, Frank B., Margaret A., Helen A., Maurice L., Edward J., Patrick F., and James W.

Patrick CARR Sr. died in 1923, and his wife Katie moved to Maloy in March, 1926. At that time Eugene was in the automobile business in Mount Ayr, Marie was teaching, Margaret was in college at Iowa State Teachers College (UNI), and the rest of the family came with their mother to Maloy. They purchased the HARTLEY house across the street from the brick school house.

In 1932, Eugene married Sarah O'TOOLE from St. Louis. They had four daughters: Ann, Jane (Mrs. Robert CONWAY), Marilyn (Mrs. John BESH), and Karen (Mrs. Andrew LORENCE). Ann died in 1956 and her father Eugene died in 1986.

Marie married James LAUGHLIN from Imogene in 1934. They made their home on the LAUGHLIN farm near Imogene and became the parents of two sons: Gary and Patrick. Gary married Mary Ellen MINETTE of Columbus, Nebraska, and Patrick married Betty CARNES of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Marie died in 1965.

Margaret married James HALEY of St. Louis in 1944. They adopted two children: James and Kathleen. James is not married, and Kathleen married Rolfe TAYLOR of Henderson, Iowa.

Frank married Virginia WILLIAMS WILSON from Creston [August 30] 1950. They had no children, but Virginia had a son Richard from a previous marriage.

Helen never married and passed away in 1961. She was employed by the Iowat Department of Health, Vital Statistics Department, Des Moins and by the Department of Agriculture, Rural Electrification Administration Department and the Social Security Department in Des Moines.

Maurice married Maxine SHAY in 1942. They had three children: Daniel, Martha (Mrs. Jon HOVE), and Thomas. Dan married Barbara SHED of East Auora, New York; Martha married Jon HOVE of Rake, Iowa; and Tom married Sherry NORRIS of Mount Ayr. Maurice died in 1985.

Edward married Marian MALOY of Redding and Mount Ayr. They had three children: Patrick (adopted), Michael, and Joseph.

Edward died in 1959. Ed was long associated with CARR Chevrolet Company both of Bedford and Mount Ayr. At the time of his death in 1959, he was co-owner of the Mount Ayr agency.

Patrick married Gladys CLARK STEELE. They had no children, but Gladys has a son, Dan D. STEELE.

James CARR graduated from Creighton University with a B.S. in pharmacy. He was employed as resident pharmacist at Veterans' Hospital in Knoxville for many years. James passed away in 1973.

At present [1987] only three of the Patrick and Katie CARR family are living. Frank is in Clearview Home in Mount Ayr; Margaret is widowed and living in Shenandoah; and Patrick is living in Mount Ayr with his wife Gladys.

The CARRS at Maloy were soon involved in the activities of life there.

Frank purchased a service station from Guy POORE in 1928. He added groceries and a dance hall later. This business continued until ill health forced him to retire in 1972. He was also [Maloy's] postmaster at one time.

Patrick was a rural mail carrier out of Maloy from 1951 until 1980. At that time his route included Blockton and Bedford also.

Maurice CARR graduated from University of Northern Iowa (UNI) in 1935. Following those years as an outstanding player for the Panther basketball team, he came home to a very successful career as a teacher and coach at Maloy and Redding. In 1958 he was employed as coach at Mount Ayr, but health problems forced him to give up coaching. In 1959 he returned to Redding as superintendent. He was later assistant superintendent at Mount Ayr in charge of outlying elementary schools and transportation.

Margaret, also a graduate of UNI, had a long career in teaching and government work. She worked in various departments - Social Security, Army Finance Center, Rural Electrificiation and Soil Conservation service in Washington, St. Louis and Kansas City. She retired in 1972 from the Soil Conservation Service in Shenandoah.

NOTES: Patrick CARR was born February 23, 1869, Donegal, Ireland, and died August 13, 1923. Katherine "Katie" (WARD) CARR was born in 1875, and died in 1947. They were interred at St. Mary's Cemetery near Maloy.

Eugene Emmet CARR was born in 1897, and died in 1986. Eugene married June 28, 1932 Sarah Elizabeth "Sally" O'TOOLE."Sally" was born April 26, 1903, the daughter of Michael J. and Jennie (DALEY) O'TOOLE. She died at the age of 85 years on October 15, 1988. Catherine "Ann" CARR was born in 1933, and died in 1956. They were interred at St. Mary's Cemetery near Maloy.

Kathleen M. CARR was born in 1903, and died in 1907. She was interred at St. Mary's Cemetery near Maloy, sharing a gravestone with her parents, Patrick and Katie.

Frank B. CARR was born in 1905, and died in 1987. His wife Virginia (WILLIAMS) WILSON CARR was born in 1911, and died in 1974. They were interred at St. Mary's Cemetery near Maloy.

Margaret A. (CARR) HALEY was born in 1907, and died in 1995. She was interred at St. Mary's Cemetery near Maloy.

Helen A. CARR was born in 1909, and died in 1961. She was interred at St. Mary's Cemetery near Maloy.

Maurice Leo CARR was born in 1911, and died in 1985. He was interred at St. Mary's Cemetery near Maloy.

Edward J. Patrick F. CARR was born in , and died in 1999. He was interred at St. Mary's Cemetery near Maloy.

James W. CARR was born in 1920, and died in 1973. He was interred at St. Mary's Cemetery near Maloy.
