THE RHEA - BURGESS FAMILY

Mary Ann BURGESS, daughter of Alamanson and William RHEA, was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia on September 27, 1829. At an early age her family moved from Virginia to Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana, and later on to Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa.

On July 28, 1849, while living in Oskaloosa, Mary Ann married Silas Randolph BURGESS. Silas, the son of Bedey BURGESS (1799-1855) and Cynthia (BRYAN) BURGESS (1806-1852), was born in Green County, Ohio, on February 13, 1829.

For the next 20 years Silas and Mary Ann BURGESS lived in Mahaska and Clarke Counties in Iowa, residing in Osceola for several years.

During the 1879's the BURGESS family moved to Caledonia in Ringgold County, Iowa, where Silas worked as a blacksmith. Silas died at the age of 57 years on September 21, 1886 and was interred in the Caledonia Cemetery.

Mary Ann moved to Kellerton in 1892 where she resided for the remainder of her life. She died on March 11, 1904 and was interred at Maple Row Cemetery, Kellerton, Iowa.

Silas and Mary Ann were the parents of 13 children, two who died prior to the family's move to Ringgold County. Their youngest son Arlington died at the age of six months and eleven days on February 15, 1871, and was interred at the Caledonia Cemetery. Of the other BURGESS children:

John N. BURGESS was born on October 2, 1850, Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa, and died at Tuskeego, Iowa, on October 3, 1904. He was married 1st circa 1877 to Fannie Pierson JONES and had four children. John married 2nd December 23, 1896, Ringgold County, Iowa, to Juliette TEETERS. Juliette was born November of 1872, Page County, Iowa, the daughter of John Lewis& Lois Muirah (RAYNOR) TEETERS. Juliette died at Spencer, Iowa. John and Juliette were the parents of one daughter, Hazel V. BURGESS, born August of 1898.

Anna "Eliza" BURGESS was born circa 1852 and married John TAYLOR. They were the parents of two children.

Harriet "Hattie" BURGESS, a twin to Carter Abraham, was born in Clarke County, Iowa, on October 27, 1857. She married Shelly S. WOODS. They did not have children.

Carter Abraham BURGESS, a twin to Hattie, was born on October 27, 1857 in Clarke County, Iowa, and died December 24, 1920, Clarinda, Page County, Iowa. He married R. Frances YOUNGLOVE in 1886. Frances was born circa 1857, Ohio. Carter and Frances were the parents of one child, Beryl F. BURGESS, born 1887 in Kansas, and died 1949, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. Sher was interred at Maple Row Cemetery, Kellerton.

Beryl F. BURGESS married in 1910, Kellerton, Ringgold County, Iowa to Ray FARMER. Ray was born in Ringgold County on January 7, 1887, and died in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, in April of 1973. He was interred at Maple Row Cemetery, Kellerton. Beryl and Ray were the parents of four children: Wilda M. FARMER, born 1912; Raylon L. FARMER, born 1914; Welda FARMER, born 1915; and Raymond L. FARMER, born August 8, 1919, Des Moines IA, and died April 25, 2002, Little Rock AR.

Olive BURGESS was born in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa, on December 29, 1860, and died March 17, 1899. She married Jerry SWIGART who was born in 1860, and died in 1934. Olive and Jerry were interred at Maple Row Cemetery, Kellerton, Iowa. They did not have children.

Willie A. BURGESS was born in August of 1862, Clarke County, Iowa, and died March 15, 1933. She married John A. WOOLLUMS on June 7, 1909. John was born in 1860, and died in 1940. Willie and John were interred at Maple Row Cemetery, Kellerton, Iowa. Olive and John did not have children.

Andrew L. BURGESS was born in June of 1865 in Clarke County, Iowa, and died in 1931. He married Ettie TEETERS. The couple did not have children.

Nellie A. BURGESS was born in Clarke County, Iowa, on July 21, 1867. She married G. W. FOSTER on October 13, 1897. They were the parents of five children.

Cora E. BURGESS was born in Clarke County Iowa, on February 7, 1879. She married Harry E. SCOTT on September 3rd of 1894. They were the parents of seven children, which includes Albert C., born 1895; Ray A., born 1903; Roy E., born 1903; and Ethel M., born 1909.

George E. BURGESS was born in Caledonia, Ringgold County, Iowa, on April 7, 1872, and died at the age of 63 years on February 27, 1936. George married Edna HIGGINS July 31, 1904. They did not have children.
