GEORGE H. TEALE

Civil War Flags.jpg George H. TEALE, an enterprising farmer of Riley Township, Ringgold County, residing on section 24, was born in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, February 19, 1846. When he was an infant his parents, Frederick and Diana C. TEALE, removed to Cuyahoga County, Ohio, and in 1855 settled in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, and there our subject grew to manhood.

He has cared for himself from the age of fourteen years, thus, early in life, learning lessons of industry and self-reliance which have been of benefit to him in later years. August 9, 1862, although but sixteen years of age, Mr. TEALE volunteered in defense of the Nation's honor, enlisting in Company E, Ninety-sixth Illinois Infantry. His regiment was assigned to the Army of the Cumberland, and the first battle in which he participated was at Chickamauga where he was wounded in the left arm, thus disabling him from active duty for five months. In the campaign against Atlanta May 9, 1864, he was wounded in the right leg at the battle of Rocky Face Ridge, a severe and dangerous wound which laid him up for one year. He rejoined his regiment at Nashville, just before it was mustered out, and for his services to his country he now receives a pension.

In 1867 he went to Colorado, remaining there, with the exception of one year spent farther West, till the fall of 1872, when he returned to Illinois, and four months later, in February, 1873, he came to Decatur County, where his brothers, Frederick, James, Thomas, Albert and Eugene were living.

He was married in Decatur County November 22, 1875, to Miss Mary E. HOLLEN, who was born in Jefferson County, Iowa, November 22, 1856, a daughter of J. N. HOLLEN, who died in Fayette Township Decatur County, in February, 1880. Her mother, Mrs. Nancy A. HOLLEN, still resides on her homestead in that township.

Mr. and Mrs. TEALE have four children - Fannie A., born June 2, 1878; Maggie E., born November 15, 1879; George W[illiam], born September 17, 1881, and Albert J., born November 16, 1883. Mrs. TEALE is a member of the United Brethren church.

Mr. TEALE was a member of the same church seven years, but at present is connected with the Methodist Episcopal church. In his political views Mr. TEALE is a Republican.

NOTE: George H. TEALE died at the age of 80 on November 20, 1926. Mary E. (HOLLEN) TEALE was born in 1856, and died in 1951. George and Mary were interred at Maple Row Cemetery, Kellerton, Ringgold County, Iowa.

Albert H. TEALE was born January 22, 1852, and died November 2, 1924. Eugene B. TEALE was born in 1849, and died in 1923. James TEALE died in 1928. They were interred at Maple Row Cemetery, Kellerton.
