J. C. BULLARD

Civil War Flags.jpg J[ohn]. C[alvin]. BULLARD, farmer, section 15, Monroe Township, was born in Upper Canada, October 26, 1842. His parents, Reuben and Caroline M. (MARVIN) BULLARD, reared a family of ten children, J. C. being the fifth child. When seven years of age [1849] his parents removed to Knox County, Illinois. He was reared on a farm and his education was obtained in the common schools. In 1850 the family came to Decatur County, locating in Center Township, near Leon. Here Mr. BULLARD resided two years, then returned to Knox County, Illinois.

August 6, 1862, he enlisted [from Elba, Illinois as a Private] in Company H., One Hundred and Second Illinois Infantry, and participated in all the battles of his regiment, from Resaca to Atlanta; attended the grand review at Washington, [mustered out of service on June 6, 1865, Washington, D. C.] and was honorably discharged in June, 1865, at Camp Fry, in Chicago, Illinois.

He was married November 9, 1865 [Knox County, Illinois], to Hannah Jennette DANIELS, of Knox County, daughter of Alexander DANIELS. He then returned to Decatur County, where he resided about five years, then removed to Henry County for two years, thence to Decatur County again, where he lived until 1882, and finally came to his present home in Monroe Township. His farm contains 140 acres of well-cultivated and well-improved land. He has a comfortable house, shade tress, an orchard, out-buildings for stock, and is engaged in general farming and stock-raising.

Mrs. BULLARD died September 29, 1877, leaving four children - James Reuben, John C., Enos Cordell and Royal Harley. October 16, 1878 [Davis City, Decatur County, Iowa], Mr. BULLARD was married to Miss Sarah Ellen BUTTS, of Leon, daughter of John BUTTS. They have four children - Minnie Caroline, Frankie, Lizzie May and Elnora.

Mr. BULLARD is a member of Decatur City Lodge, no. 102, I. O.O. F., and is a worthy member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Post-office, Kellerton.

NOTE: J. Reuben BULLARD was born December 9, 1810, Leeds, Ontario, Canada, the son of Josiah BULLARD (1779-1847) and Susanna (SLY) BULLARD (1784-1830). Reuben married on December 5, 1832, Leeds, Ontario, to Caroline MARVIN, who was born January 8, 1816, Leeds, Ontario, Canada. Caroline died in Decatur County, Iowa, on March 28, 1883, at the age of 67 years. Reuben died at the age of 88 years on March 10, 1899, Decatur County, Iowa. Reuben and Caroline were interred at Elk Chapel Cemetery, Decatur County, Iowa.

John Calvin BULLARD died at the age of 69 on August 7, 1912, Kellerton, Ringgold County, Iowa. Hannah Jennette "Hattie" (DANIELS) BULLARD, John's first wife, was born in 1848, Jackson County, Ohio, the daughter of Alexander DANIELS (1817-1855) and Lucinda "Lucy" (RUSSELL) DANIELS (1822-1890). Hattie died September 29, 1877, in Bloomington Township, Decatur County, Iowa, at the age of 29 years. Sarah Ellen (BUTTS) BULLARD, daughter of John and Ellen BUTTS, was born November 17, 1861, Leon, Decatur County, Iowa, and died at the Decatur County Hospital, Leon, Iowa, on May 13, 1951 at the age of 89 years. John, Hattie, and Sarah were interred at Elk Chapel Cemetery, Decatur County, Iowa.
