M. M. Reading

M. M. Reading, who is now engaged in the successful conduct of a hardware and implement business in Churdan, was born in De Kalb county, Illinois, in 1852, a son of C. H. and Elizabeth (Honning) Reading, the former a native of Pennsylvania and the latter of Wyoming county, New York. In the year 1861, the father removed from Sycamore, Illinois, to Jefferson, Greene county, Iowa, where he was engaged in merchandising for ten years, at the end of which period he sold out and went to Calhoun county, Iowa. Here he bought a farm and successfully operated the Same for a number of years, passing away on April 7, 1905, at the age of eighty-two years.

M. M. Reading acquired his education in the schools of Jefferson, having accompanied his father on his removal to that place in 1861. He remained under the parental roof until he had attained his majority and then began farming on his own account in Reading township, Calhoun county, Iowa, which township was named in honor of the family. Here he purchased three hundred and sixty acres of land, which he improved and tilled, and successfully carried on his farming operations until 1903. He was also a raiser of shorthorn cattle, Poland China hogs, etc., his live-stock interests proving another source of gratifying income to him. Four years ago, however, he became connected with Mr. Bevelheimer in the conduct of a hardware and implement business in Churdan. They have built up an excellent trade by reason of their well known reliability and straightforward business methods and also because of the uniform quality of their goods. They have erected storehouses and are in control of a prosperous and constantly growing enterprise.

In Jefferson, Iowa, Mr. Reading was united in marriage to Miss Sarah F. Smith, a daughter of Marvin W. and Hannah (Johnson) Smith, who settled on a farm in this county as early as 1868. Four children have blessed the marriage of our subject, namely: Mrs. Ada Ferguson, of Reading township; Mrs. Maude Fitz, of Adaza; Charles M., a graduate of Ames College, now in Sioux City; and H. W., who is attending Sac Institute at present and when at home assists his father in the store. He is a bright, energetic young man.

Mr. Reading is a republican in his political views and while residing in Reading township he served as township treasurer for twenty-one years and took a prominent part in all township affairs. He is public-spirited, giving his co-operation to every movement which tends to promote the moral, intellectual. and material welfare of the community. He has been watchful of all the details of his business and of all indications pointing toward prosperity and from the beginning has had an abiding faith in the ultimate success of his enterprise, being now numbered among the representative business men and citizens of the county. He and his wife are highly esteemed throughout the entire community and the cordial hospitality of their pleasant home is greatly enjoyed by their many friends.
