ROY H. WALTER, Beaman, son Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Walter; aged 20; recruited May 4, 1917; stationed Ft. Scott, Cal.; C. A. C.; died, Ft. Scott, July 28, 1917; first death among recruits from Marshall county.
 
HUGH WEATHERMAN, Beaman, son Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Weatherman; aged 21, farmer, recruited, Marshalltown, May 10, 1917; stationed Ft. Logan, Colo., Pvt. Bat. C, 5th F. A.; transferred to Ft. Bliss, Tex.; overseas Aug. 1917; killed in action, March 1, 1918, in German attack in St. Mihiel salient, north of Toul; first soldier from Marshall county killed in action; posthumously awarded Distinguished Service Cross.
