The Alumni of Grand River High School
A few years ago the members of the class of 1938 decided to meet annually for a picnic and reminiscing. Eventually, they decided it would be a good idea to include all the alumni of Grand River high school. In October of 1965 a meeting was held with a few of the interested parties being able to attend. With Wayne O. Burchett appointed as President and Reba Lamb as Secretary, the task of getting the names and addresses of the graduates was begun. Some of the people who have spent a great deal of time and effort in compiling the facts are:

The first schoolhouse was built in 1879, as far as we know. It was a building which was later moved three blocks east, and converted to a [rest of the paragraph is missing].

MEMORIES, REVERIES and SOME NOSTALGIA RELATIVE TO THE CLASS OF 1905, GRAND RIVER HIGH SCHOOL by Ray Morell

There were only three graduates in 1905. The class had been much larger in earlier years, and even at the beginning of that school year. Some moved away and some dropped out, so just three of us crossed the finish-line. **** Lena Overholtzer-Fogh, Carrie Edwards-Brennaman and myself, E. Ray Morrell. At that time we had an eight-months term and Carrie started teaching in a rural school, in Clarke County, a week before we graduated. I started a spring term at the West School-house on Monday following. Lena wasn't old enough to secure a teacher's certificate that year, so she went on to Iowa Teachers College, at Cedar Falls. Then the school building was of frame construction and covered with sheet-iron to resemble hewn stones. It stood near the south-west corner of the present school grounds. Construction on the present school building began in 1916, but I do not think that it was used until September, 1917. The old building was moved two blocks south on Main Street, to where the Phillips 66 Filling Station now is. There it was used as a hardware store by Dick Barber, I believe, until it later burned down. I may be an "old Fogy" but I think that now a days, too much stress is placed on athletics. Then young people, both boys and girls, found more time to be of help to their parents. We had never heard of basket-ball. We chose sides and played baseball on the ground just east of the school building. Every so often someone would hit a foul ball and break a window. Then we had to dig up our small change to have it replaced. We did have a football and "piddled" around with it in a very amateurish fashion. Our Superintendent, Harvey Cosner, was very helpful in sometimes telling an anecdote or short story to help rivet certain facts in our minds. One day a girl, in class, had made an error and was feeling pretty blue about it. The teacher, Rose Burkhart, later Howard Shaw's mother, said, "Don't fee too badly about it; by our mistakes, we learn." Irwin Brennaman was sitting next to me and he whispered, "Well, I've been wondering why I couldn't learn anything." I had a little trouble to keep myself from laughing aloud. We older alumni who have been spared to live this long, should be very grateful to our Creator for the privilege, and doubly grateful that we can attend this REUNION. Ray M.

During the process of school reorganization, Grand River School became part of Grand Valley School District in 1960. In the Fall of 1960, Grand River High School students began attending class at Kellerton, Iowa. Elementary students from Grand River vicinity and all Grand Valley junior high students attended class at Grand River. Grand Valley Community School District was dissolved with the last class graduating in 1992. Disposition of Grand Valley School District property was finalized in 1998. The band and music room (former rural Brick Country School) was given to the town of Grand River to be maintained as a school museum. It was moved across the street west of the school grounds and placed in the town park. The Grand River school building was used for a while as a fish hook factory and the alumni continued to meet for their annual banquet in the gymnasium. Ultimately, the school building and the gymnasium were demolished. A new community center was erected on the former site of the school building.
