GAR Post 327

Biography of D. C. Law

(Source and date unknown)

Daniel Crawford Law, the present Commander of Albert Winchell Post No. 327, Lyons, was fifteen years old when he enlisted in the Civil War. He enlisted as a drummer boy but upon arriving at the Camp at Punxsutawney, Penn., he was informed that the drummer boy for the regiment was already recruited and he could have his choice of going back home or carrying a musket. He chose to carry the musket.

Mr. Law served in every important engagement of the Civil War from Chancelorsville in May, 1863, to Appomatox in 1865, but never received a wound. His knapsack was shot clean from his back by a shell at one time but he escaped uninjured. During the hardest fighting, his company, in a period of thirty days, was reduced from five hundred men to fifty-two. Mr. Law states most emphatically that as long as one member of the Albert Winchell Post remains, the Post charter will be retained and the interest of the members of the Post in the cause for which they fought has never lessened. There were twenty-two charter members of Albert Winchell Post when it was organized in 1884. In 1890 it had grown to ninety members. Today, but seven remain. These survivors still perform the sacred task of decorating and caring for one hundred and sixty graves of their comrades in the four cemeteries of this community.

The Albert Winchell Post 327 was chartered 28 May 1884. It had 20 charter members and a total of 90 members. It was disbanded in 01 Jan 1928. The following list is from index cards of membership records on microfilm at FamilySearch.org. The Clinton County Historical Society has these cards.

This is an example of the information the cards contain. Some are very well filled out and some, unfortunately, only contain a name a very little other information. This one is for Albert E. Winchell.
