Nelson on the Poor Farm

NELSON, NILLSON, TITUS, ROBERTSON

I am trying to help my Aunt, Evalyn Titus Dearmin with our family genealogy. We have traced her grandmother to Worth County, Kensett, IA in 1895.

In the 1895 Iowa Census, they are found living on the Worth County Poor Farm:

Josephine Nelson age 27 from Sweden-pauper
Olivia Nelson age 2 born in Worth County
Lewis Nelson age 0 born in Worth County (my grandfather)

My grandfather was adopted at age 2 in 1896 by William Titus and Katherine Morrissey Titus of Osage, IA. No adoption record found to date.

His sister, Olivia, name changed to Freida Nillson was adopted by James Robertson and Gertrude Leonard Robertson of Osage, IA in 1896. We have this adoption record. Her mother is named as Josefina Nillson in the record.

Any information on this family mystery would be greatly appreciated. We would like to know where Josephine/Josefina came from and where she went after her children were adopted. Thank you!
