Mrs. Mathilda Frederika Burk, daughter of George Huss and Wilhelmina Kiak, was born on Sept. 18, 1874, on the old George Huss farm about two miles north of Churchville. She died Tuesday afternoon, March 21, at her home with a stroke. She was 86 years, 6 months and 3 days of age. She attended the Churchville school in her youth. She attended the St. Paul Lutheran Church while it was located in Churchville. On Jan 3, 1906, she was united in marriage with John Burk. The wedding took place in Churchville and was performed by the Rev. Eugene Curless, the Christian minister. The newly wedded couple live in Churchville for several years and then they moved to the homeplace where Mrs. Burk was born. So, she lived all but two years of her life on the farm place where she was born and died. Six children were born to this union. Josephine and William died in infancy. Joe Burk, George Burk, both of Churchville, Elmer Burk of Bevington and Albert Burk of Churchville. Her husband preceded her in death, and the burial service was held in St. Paul Lutheran Church of Martensdale in September 1940. Her sister, Mrs. Anna Margareth Kosky, and two brothers, George Frederick Huss and Frederick Wilhelm Huss also preceded her in death. She is survived by four sons; Joe, George, Elmer and Albert Burk. Three grandchildren; Donald, Michael and Helen Mathilda Burk. Interment was a Linn Grove Cemetery. The funeral services were held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Martensdale, on March 24, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Vernon W. Fasse officiated. Misses Janes Martens, Paula Martens and Linda Anderson sang “Nearer My God To Thee” and “Softly and Tenderly,” Miss Hulda Wise accompanied them at the organ. The pallbearers were Raymond Martens, John Martens, George Martens, Faye McConnell, Clarence Banks and Anthony LaFratte.
