In Response To: information about death records (Donna Hughes)

In Iowa, official registration of births, deaths, and marriages began July 1, 1880. Though in Van Buren county at least, marriage records go back to as early as 1837. Though it was law that all these vital records be recorded beginning in 1880, it doesn't mean they were recorded in every case.

All original records that have been registered are on file with the Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics.

Below is a link on how to obtain vital records. I think if it were me I'd call the number shown to make sure procedures and fees are up to date. It seems to me I've read the fee is $15 now.
