Charles W. Townsend

Charles Walker Townsend, 69, of Greensburg, died at 2:15 a.m. Friday, February 1, 1980, in Scottsdale Memorial Hospital, Scottsdale, Arizona. He had received a head injury, never regaining consciousness, when struck by an auto at a street crossing in Prescott, Arizona, at 9:a5 Thursday morning. He was on his usual morning walk, walking with the light when the accident occurred. He was transferred from the Prescott hospital and well on the way to Scottsdale before the family could be located due to no Prescott identification.

Born July 13, 1910, near Troy, Iowa, he was the son of Olen and Mary Belle (Work) Townsend.

On April 22, 1934, in Cantril, Iowa, he was married to Helen Beatrice Barrow, who survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Paul Dean Townsend, Keokuk, Iowa, Willis Merle Townsend, Fayetteville, North Carolina, Carl Ray Townsend, Baring, Missouri; three daughters-in-law; ten grandchildren; two sister, Charity Kelso, St. Petersburg, Florida, Florence Townsend, Chicago, Illinois; nieces and nephews.

Mr. Townsend lived in Iowa until 1951, when the family moved southwest of Memphis, where he was engaged in farming. In 1954, they moved to Greensburg, where he operated a general store for 15 years, then resumed farming. He was a member of the Memphis Methodist Church but attended Greensburg Baptist Church.

He was an active member of Greensburg Lodge No. 414 A.F. and A.M.; Greensburg Chapter 258 Order of Eastern Star and Kirksville White Shrine No. 4; Blue Lodge, and Kirksville Council No. 44.

Masonic rites were held February 3 at 7:30 in Hudson-Rimer Chapel. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Carl Martin of Kahoka, pastor of Greensburg Baptist Church, at 2 p.m., February 4, 1980, in the chapel. Burial was in Greensburg Cemetery.
