JAMES B. THOMPSON

James Benton Thompson was born May 20, 1890 at Milton, Ia., the son of Jasper and Amanda Rinabarger Smith. He was adopted by his uncle and aunt, James Benton Thompson St. and Edith Ann Rinabarger Thompson, while an infant.

He was married to Olive A. Buckles on Oct. 17, 1908. His wife, Olive and infant daughter, Mary Evelyn, preceded him in death on February 19, 1914.

His early life was spent in farming southwest of Cantril. He spent three years as a proprietor of the meat market in Cantril but most of his life was spent as a barber in Cantril, Ottumwa and Burlington.

He was a member of the Cantril Christian church ince early childhood. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Ladge(err) No. 114 of Ottumwa and the Knights of Pythias Lodge No. 162 of Burlington.

He is survived by two sons, Joseph L. of Grand Rapids, Mich., Pahl of Glenwood, Iowa; a daughter, Mrs. Illene Watson of Keosauqua; also a daughter, Mrs. Marcella Wells of Pleasant Valley, by a second marriage; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Lester Smith of Ottumwa, Olen Smith of Davenport, Neil Smith of Molin, Ill. and one sister, Mrs. Amy Cox of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death also by five brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 29, at 2 p.m. at the Cantril Christian church with the pastor, Rev. Jeffrey Berkley in charge. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery at Cantril.
