Pulaski teen-ager drowns

PULASKI - A Davis County youth drowned Friday in Lacey Keosauqua State Park.

Shawn Michael Sample, 15, of Pulaski Route 1, drowned in the park lake, authorities said.

He was taken to Van Buren County Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua, where he was pronounced dead at 7:50 p.m. Friday.

He was born Dec. 10, 1975, in Jefferson County to Ronald W. and Barbara Enlow Hird Sample.

He was a student at Davis County schools and a member of the high school band, Oydessey 4-H Club and the Church of the Open Bible in Bloomfield.

He is survived by his father and stepmother, Ronald and Darlene Sample of Floris; his mother and stepfather, Barbara and Mike Hird of Pulaski; a brother, Shannon at home; a sister, Kimberly at home; a half-sister, Ashley Sample of Ottumwa; four stepbrothers, Jim Hird of Blakesburg and Mickael, Bryan and Robby Hudnut of Floris; two stepsisters, Melissa Hudnut of Floris and Nicole Enlow of Blakesburg; grandparents, Ralph and Helen Sample of Bloomfield, and Geraldine Rossi of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Bob Enlow of Bloomfield; stepgrandparents, Bernice Hird of Pulski and Harold and Dorothy Dever of Quincy, Ill., Joe Rossi of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Alice Enlow of Bloomfield; and great-grandparents, Helen Enlow of Bloomfield and Hazel Stanford of Milton.

The service will be 10 a.m. Tueday at Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield, the Rev. George McCord officiating. Burial will be in Brown Cottage Cemetery in Van Buren County.

Family visitation will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the family.
