Keosauqua native dies in 1-vehicle accident

FORT MADISON - The funeral service for one of two Fort Madison men killed in a one-vehicle accident Thursday will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua.

Keosauqua native Richard C. Sherod, 34, was killed when the pickup he was driving crashed about 6 p.m. Thursday on Highway 2 four miles west of Donnellson. Also killed was a passenger, 25-year old Robert Andrews of Fort Madison.

Sherod was born March 6, 1952, the son of Jack and Betty Lawson Sherod. He grew up in Mount Sterling and attended high school in Memphis, Mo. He was a construction worker.

Surviving are two sons, Joshua, 10, and Wayland, 8, both of Farmington; his mother and stepfather, Betty and Ivan Mitchell of Bonaparte; and two sisters, Sheila Hoaglin of Hillsboro and Mary Plemmons of Battletown, Ky.

The Rev. Ed Newman will officiate at the service. Memorials to an education fund for Sherod's sons may be left at the funeral home. Interment arrangements are pending.

According to the Iowa Highway Patrol, Sherod's westbound 1976 International pickup struck an intersection embankment, became airborne, flipped twice and came to rest in the north ditch. The truck wasn't discovered by a passerby until 7 a.m. Friday.

Another passenger, Andy Decker, 25, Keokuk, was pinned in the wreckage and extricated Friday morning by the Donnellson Fire Department, according to the patrol.

Decker is listed in satisfactory condition at Fort Madison Community Hospital. None of the three occupants of the truck was wearing a seat belt, the patrol said.
