A West Point man was killed in an accident Sunday morning east of West Point when his car struck a parked car on the shoulder of Iowa Highway 103.

According to the sheriff's department, Michael Dale Coleman, 36, was pronounced dead at the scene by Lee County Medical Examiner Eugenio Torres following the 6:20 a.m. accident. He has sustained numerous injuries.

According to the accident report, Coleman was driving westbound 1967 Pontiac GTO about two miles east of West Point, apparently at a high rate of speed, when he crossed the center line, traveled about 120 feet on the south shoulder, and collided head-on with a parked 1980 Pontiac Sunbird owned by Marsha Mathes of Burlington.

After striking the car, Coleman's vehicle kept going west on the shoulder and bank for about 300 feet, rolled once and landed on its wheels, throwing him onto the shoulder, a spokesperson for the sheriff's department said.

The motor was knocked from Coleman's car, landing about 200 feet from the point of impact. The transmission was found about 300 feet from the impact point.

The incident still is under investigation. An obituary may be found on Page 2 today.
