Edward Van Alstine and Nancy Ella Kunce were married on November 10, 1878 in Taylor County, Iowa. They are enumerated in the 1900 census in Nodaway Township, Taylor County, Iowa. Edward is listed as having been born in July 1856 and Nancy E. in March 1856. Edward died on June 14, 1903. Their son, Charles Edward Van Alstine was born on February 21, 1882 in Taylor County, Iowa and was living in the household in 1900.

Charles Edward's mother was Nancy Ella (Kunce) VanAlstine and his wife was Emma (Shum) VanAlstine Frost.

Charles died on May 24, 1936.

Gravity - Vanalstine Dies Here Last Sunday

Charles Vanalstine died suddenly at his home in Gravity Sunday. The funeral services were held at the Christian church Tuesday afternoon. Burial was in the Gravity cemetery. A number of friends were entertained in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Vanalstine Sunday and about 3 p.m., while they were sitting out on the porch visiting, Mr. Vanalstine suffered a stroke of paralysis and in a very short time passed away. He had been in poor health for several months past but was able to be up and around most of the time.

Charles Van Alstine
An old resident of Guss and Gravity communities, Charles Van Alstine, sustained a stroke at his home in Gravity, where he passed away Sunday, May 24, and was laid to rest in the Gravity cemetery the Tuesday following. He was past 54 years of age, born Feb. 21, 1882 at Guss, son of Edward and Ella Kunce VanAlstine. He was married in 1904 to Emma Shum, who survives him, as does a son George, three grandchildren, four sisters and three brothers. The Clarinda brothers and sisters are Mrs. Myrtle Wilcox, Mrs. Bertha Mitchell, Mrs. Hettie Orme, and Lewis Van Alstine of Hood River, Ore., and Mrs. Dora Swallow of St. Louis, Mo.

Charles Van Alstine's father, Edward VanAlstine died on June 14, 1903. His death certificate should list the cemetery in which he is interred.

The 1905 Taylor County Iowa State Census enumerates widow Nancy with Dora, Loyd, Nettie, Lewis, Archie, Charles and Emma living in [New Market], Nodaway Twp., Taylor county.

Van Alstine Reunion

The Van Alstine family reunion was held at the Clarinda Chautauqua park Sunday October 20, in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Van Alstine and granddaughter Rosemary from Bingen, Wash. and Mr. and Mrs. Archie Van Alstine and Connie from Fruitland, Ida. Others present were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Frost, Mr. and Mrs. Max Williamson and Virginia Ann, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Brown and family, Mr. and Mrs. George Lawson and family, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Van Alstine and family, Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Van Alstine and Vona. Mrs. Lewis Mitchell and family, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Van Alstine, Mr. and Mrs. George Wilcox, Mr. and Mrs. Dell Orme and family, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Orme, Mr. and Mrs. Hal Fulton, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Phillips, Mr. and Mrs. Mae Scott and family.
