James, Delila, Jane and James F. Lewis

LEWIS, MOTE, BRENNEMAN

I have been trying to locate information about my great great grandmother Lucinda Jane (Lewis) Mote. It has always been family lore that she and her brother were adopted by a Lewis family in New York (or the Lewis parents were born in New York). My great great grandfather married a Jane Lewis in Tama County in 1879. Prior to that, the 1870 US Census for Carlton Township, Tama County, Iowa lists a James and Delila Lewis (born in New York), with two children Jane (b. 1859) and James F. (b. 1861), although the childrens' birthplaces are listed as Iowa. We are assuming that the Jane listed is my great great grandmother. Hence, we wanted to determine whether Jane and James F. were adopted by James and Delila Lewis as part of the Orphan Train. Incidentally, I have reason to believe that Reva Lewis Brenneman (d. 1992) might be granddaughter of James F. Lewis, so I'd be interested in getting in contact with anyone who knows about Reva. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
