In Memory of
Betty Jane (DeTar) Brunkow
September 3, 1923 - September 24, 2017Betty Jane Brunkow, age 94, of Ames, IA, passed away in the comfort of her home on Sunday, September 24, 2017. A Celebration of Life will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Friday, September 29, 2017, at the Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th St, Ames, Iowa.
Betty was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to James and Nelsina (Hanson) De Tarr on September 3, 1923. She grew up and graduated from Delano High School in Minnesota.
Growing up in the 1920's and 1930's she understood the meaning of hard work, sacrifice, and love of country. So much so she worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" in San Diego, California, during WWII. Soon after she met and married Paul Brunkow of San Diego, and over the ensuing years they were blessed with four children; Robert, Bruce, Bryon, and Theresa. Betty enjoyed working with her hands and created many quilts, knitted items, and needle points to her family's delight.
Betty is survived in life by her four children, Robert Paul Brunkow of Joplin, MO, Bruce Edward Brunkow of Lebanon, TN, Bryon Lee Brunkow of Herndon, VA, and Theresa Lyn (Brunkow) Fisher of Ames, Iowa, and six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Paul Brunkow, her parents, and her brother, John Mara of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
