From the Alton Democrat, October 13, 1939:

Veteran Dies In Sioux City

A number from Hospers and Orange City attended the funeral services at Sheldon Monday of the late Walter Voss, 53, who died in Sioux City at a hospital after taking very ill on a Sioux City street. He and his brother, Jack Voss, were spending the day in Sioux City.

Unable to reach relatives at Sheldon by telephone, Jack started for Sheldon to get Walter’s wife after seeing his brother established in the hospital. Reaching Sheldon he called the hospital and was informed Walter had passed on. Deceased was a veteran of the World war in which he received injuries which disabled him and was unable to work.

Among those attending the services were W. Vander Kamp of Hospers and Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Wierda of Orange City.

From De Volksvriend, October 12, 1939, Sheldon news (in Dutch):

Mr. Walter Voss, 53 years old, suffered a stroke while walking on Fifth Street in Sioux City, and died in a hospital the same afternoon. , Mr. Voss, a soldier and an invalid from the World War, lived for 25 years in Sheldon. He was born in Alton, and lived in Pella, Iowa, before moving to Sheldon. The deceased is survived by his wife, six brothers, namely John, Jack and Tony, of Sheldon, William of Boyden, Louis of Bronson [only these five were named], and one sister,who lives in Mason City.

His death certificate (informant Louis Voss) shows him born October 12, 1886, in Alton, Iowa; parents Arthur Voss, born in Holland, and Marie VanDerKamp, born in Alton; wife Martha Voss; retired; died in St. Vincent Hospital, Sioux City, at 5:00 p.m. October 6, 1939; cause, cerebral hemorrhage, buried at Sheldon.

His FindaGrave.com page shows him buried in East Lawn Cemetery, Sheldon. No family information. There is a photo of his headstone.

Ancestry.com has a marriage record for groom Walter Voss, resident of Sheldon, occupation “masonary”[?]; age next birthday 43, born at Alton, Iowa, parents Art Voss and Mary Vanderkamp, first marriage; bride Martha Harnack, resident of Sheldon, age 48, born in Berlin, Germany, parents August Hoffmann and Louisa [illegible], second marriage; married at Sheldon June 26, 1929.

His wife’s application for a military headstone shows him to have served as a private in Company E, 329th Infantry, 83rd Division in the World War; served from July 24, 1918 to Feb. 12, 1919, pension no. C-1,214,206.

His World War I draft registration card (June 1917, age 30) shows him a resident of Sheldon, employed as a mason by John Voss, Boyden, Iowa, single, no dependents; medium height, slender build, grey eyes, black hair.
