Arend "Arie" Sliekers was born in the Netherlands to Hindrik Jan Sliekers (1826-1925) and Willemtien Kannegieter(1827-1892) on 22 Aug 1853. He married Aaltje VanEngen 26 Apr 1879. Arend and Aaltje arrived in America 22 May 1885 aboard the P Caland in New York with their first three children.

They had nine children together, the last six born in Iowa:
Willemtje "Minnie" or "Mina" Riepma(1880-1941), Harm "Herman" (1881-unknown), Jan (1884-unknown), Alburtus "Albert" (1886-1964), Jantje "Jennie" (1887-1931), Geertruida "Gertrude" (1890-1979), Gatiena "Sena" Schaeferle(1892-1982), Jan "John" (1895-1955), Hendrika "Rika" Jorgensen(1898-1982).
