From the Hawarden Independent, July 19, 1928, news of Ireton and vicinity:

Brought to Ireton for Burial

The body of J. Y. Cartano was shipped here from Denver, Colo., and it arrived Sunday. Mr. Cartano passed away last Friday. Burial services were held at the grave, conducted by Rev. Wm. P. Webb. Interment was made beside his wife and daughter. A goodly number of old time friends and neighbors gathered at the grave for the services.

Mr. Cartano was about 67 years old at the time of his death. For many years at different times he was engaged in the barber business but the last time he was in Ireton he conducted a meat market, having operated one at Craig just prior to coming here. He went to California when he left Ireton where he made his home at Modesto for some time where he was employed in a hotel. His health began to fail him and he went to Denver where death overtook him. Jake had many friends here and although he had more than his share of hard luck he came right back smiling and determined to win out. He was a good barber and ran a clean shop for many years.

His wife and daughter Gertrude preceded him in death many years. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Eva Fosling of South Sioux City, Neb., and Mrs. Hazel Boyd of Chicago and he also leaves some grandchildren. Both his daughters and a brother-in-law, Mr. McGonagle, were here to attend the funeral.

From the Ireton Ledger, July 19, 1928:

FORMER IRETON RESIDENT DIES IN COLORADO
J. Y. Cartano Suffered Stroke of Apoplexy. Body Is Buried Here Sunday

This community was saddened to learn of the death of Jacob Y. Cartano, which occurred at a hospital in Denver, Colo., last Thursday, July 12, 1928. His death was caused by a stroke of apoplexy.

Jacob Y. Cartano, son of Antoine and Caroline Cartano, was born in Pennsylvania, Feb. 9, 1855, and passed away at the age of 73 years, 5 mo. and 3 days. His youth was spent in the coal-mining district in Pennsylvania, and when he grew older, he secured employment in the coal mines. in 1883, he was united in holy matrimony with Miss Lizzie Mac Conagle, and three daughters came to bless this union.

About 32 years ago the family came to Ireton to make their home, where the father was engaged in the barber business here. In the year 1905, the angel of death entered the house and took a daughter, Gertrude, who was 14 years of age. Soon after the death of the daughter, the family moved to Goodland, Kans., and the next year, 1906, the mother passed to the Great Beyond. In the fall of the same year the family returned to Ireton to make their home.

Since the deceased left Ireton about 5 years ago, he was employed as a clerk in a hotel in Modesto, Cal., and also worked for a time in Los Angeles. Later on, he went to Chicago, at which place he resided for some time at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Hazel Boyd, and he also spent some time in Kansas.

The body was laid to rest in Pleasant Hill Cemetery beside the body of his wife and daughter, Gertrude. Rev. Wm. P. Webb, pastor of the M. E. church conducted brief services at the grave.

The deceased is survived by his two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Boyd of Chicago and Mrs. Eva Gruber of Sioux City, who were here for the services. Others from out-of-town were Mr. and Mrs. John Mac Gonagle of Washta, Iowa, the former a brother-in-law of the deceased.
