Hawarden Independent, November 19, 1925

Mrs. John H. Huyck, aged 84 years passed away about 5 o'clock Monday morning at her home in this city following an immediate illness of but a few days from pneumonia. She was taken sick last Thursday and due to her advanced years her condition was at once regarded as serious and her son and wife, Mr. & Mrs. Frank R. Huyck, were summoned from Sioux City. Sunday afternoon, however, her condition seemed so much improved that her son returned to Sioux City but had scarcely been gone an hour when there was a sudden turn for the worse and he was hastily recalled. She lapsed into unconsciousness Sunday evening and passed away the following morning.

Funeral services were held at the home of her son, T. S. Huyck, at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Edwin Booth Jr., pastor of the Associated Churches. Interment was made in Grace Hill Cemetery.

Sarah Levina Harrison was born at Waybridge, England, May 29, 1841. She was the ninth in a family of eleven children, six boys and five girls. The family came to America on the ship Laurel when she was ten years of age. They located in Detroit, MI, where they lived for twenty-two years and then moved to Lincoln, Neb., where she was united in marriage to John H. Huyck, the devoted husband who now mourns her death. After a few years in Lincoln they moved to Chamberlain, SD, where they lived for nine years and then to Sioux Falls where they resided for thirty years. In October, 1921, Mr. & Mrs. Huyck came to Hawarden to the home which they have since occupied.

Two sons were born to Mr. & Mrs. Huyck, both of whom wee at her bedside during her last hours. Thomas Smith Huyck of Hawarden and Frank R. Huyck of Sioux City. A grandson, Oliver Smith Huyck, was also raised in her home. He lost his life during the World War. All of her brothers and sisters preceded her in death and none of her husband's family are left.

Mrs. Huyck was a member of the Episcopal church. She was always deeply religious and her Bible was in daily use. Her charities and neighborly services were unusual. Her interests and sympathies were broad and deep. For twenty years she suffered with palsy which prevented her from taking as active a part in community affairs as she would have wished.

Her passing is a severe blow to the aged husband and to him and the members of his family goes out the sincere sympathy of the entire community.
